Margaret Bruton at the California School of Design

Margaret Bruton, 1912
Blue & Gold University of California yearbook photo

Recently I found the above photo of Margaret Bruton in The 1913 Blue and Gold (actually published in 1912), the yearbook for the University of California. In a past blogpost, I discussed Margaret's high school years and wondered why her photo didn’t appear in the 1912 Alameda High School yearbook. It seems that rather than completing high school, Margaret decided to take classes at the California School of Design at the San Francisco Institute of Art.

At the time, the California School of Design was under the auspices of the University of California as is described in this excerpt from the yearbook:

Here is a yearbook photograph of Margaret with her classmates from the Alpha Chapter of Delta Nu, a sorority at the California School of Design:

All of the women pictured above attended a “Delta Nu sorority dance” held at the Bruton home in Alameda in February 1912.

Just one year later, Margaret would win an extremely competitive scholarship and depart for the east coast to attend the prestigious Art Students League of New York.
